May 1, 2015

I reached 100k plus a bit by the end of the April NaNo.  It was not easy and I can't say I'm happy with the stuff -- but then I wasn't before the April NaNo, so it probably isn't any worse.

I have an idea for a new story, at least.  I'm not sure if I can do it -- it's going to be a bit odd.  I'm going to try to see if an older book (about 1910) can be adapted to an sf story.  I plan to just read a page or two and use that as the very basic storyline, much the way people have been adapting fairytales for the last few years.

The book I am looking at is Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.  I will likely make the MC a bit older, too.  So, at the opening, she'll be arriving at a space station, not a farm somewhere.  I'll be moving along the plot line (and probably skipping things that simply will not work) and seeing what I can get out of it.  I might call it Sunny.  Or Sunny of Redtail Station, or something like that.  This is going to be just for fun, just to see what can happen.

You never know until you try.

May 2, 2015

We went to DeSoto today!  Yay!  That was a nice trip.  Saw some egrets in breeding plumage which was lovely.  Didn't get a lot of writing done but that's okay.  We are well past NaNo now.  I need to start looking at other things.

I haven't had a chance to start the new book, though I thought a bit about it.  I hope to get to it next week.  Tomorrow is some work stuff.  Lots of work stuff, in fact.

Had a nice day, though.

May 3, 2015

And today we went up to South Dakota and visited!  That was fun too.  Lovely thunderstorm on the way home.  I wish I could have gotten a nice picture of it.

Before we left town, though, we were stuck on the off-ramp of the highway because a tractor had pulled down a wire and it started a little fire.  Eventually, they had us turn around and go back down and onto the highway, which was interesting.

May 4, 2015

Writing is back to the 'ugh' stage again.  I am barely getting 1k a day and I need to get moving on something that will take my attention better.  I'm trying to do some short stories, but even those aren't working out very well.  I haven't had a chance to start the new novel project yet, either.

I need focus.  Or something.

May 5, 2015

Not doing any better on the writing.  In fact, I seem mostly to be doing well with naps more than anything.  Come on brain!  Time to kick into gear again and get something going here!

Other than that -- weather is odd.  Might get some storms tonight.  That's my big news.  Almost done with a bad short story, but if I get it finished, I might be able to move on to something else.

May 6, 2015

We had a bit of a storm, but not much really.  A little rain.  We need more in this area but at least the air isn't filled with dust and we are no longer getting the fire hazard warnings every day.  Or maybe we are -- I've stopped opening Weatherbug since they changed it.  I might have to watch more carefully now.

Other than that, I'm doing okay.  Writing a bit of this and that.  Today I started the rewrite of Touched by the Wild.  It's not going to be a fast rewrite, but I'm happy with it so far.

May 7, 2015

People are getting some bad weather out there.  Everything so far is south of us, though.  We're fine here.

It's a quiet week. Still working on story stuff.  I'll get something done eventually.  I hope.

Just not much to say.

May 8, 2015

Still not really doing well with writing.  I'm moving along on things but I'm having a 'not connecting' moment here.  Or week.  Or maybe month.

I am enjoying Touched by the Wild, but it is a very slow process.  More detail!  I simply do not do well on detail sometimes.  I'm working at getting better.

And that's it, really.

May 9, 2015

Flooding in some parts of Nebraska.  Snow -- lots of snow -- in other parts.  Tomorrow we might get some 'weather' and it could be rough.  I'm betting we'll miss most everything since we're right on the edge.

Still pecking away at stories.  Focus -- that's what I need!  Focus on something.  Anything!  LOL  I am even bouncing around on this little thing, going off to check one thing and another.

Okay, time to get settled in and . . . do some art, I think.  Yeah.  I"ll get to the writing eventually, right?

May 10, 2015

The weather here wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been.  Just a bit of rain and wind.  Not far away it was much worse, so we got lucky here.

Writing is still going slowly, but I hope to give it a push soon.  I like the rewrite of Touched by the Wild, but it is going slowly.

That's about it!  Not much going on around here!

May 11, 2015

I am trying for a 3k day today, with all of it on Touched by the Wild.  It is moving along nicely and I'm a bit over 1/3rd of the way there.  I seem to have a nice feel for it.

Cold here today.  About 50f out, but at least we don't have the 18 inches of snow they got in Western Nebraska.  Am I glad for that?  I don't know.  We didn't get much snow last winter.  One storm with a bunch of snow might have been fun, especially since it would melt away fast.

May 12, 2015

I got up today with an idea of how to easily redo the ACOA site.  Well, relatively easy.  I'm copying pages out right now.  It's a small site.  It doesn't need Joomla! the way the bigger two sites (Forward Motion and Vision) do.  I can handle this much better in html.

But it will take a bit of work.

Yesterday was a pretty good writing day.  This has taken my attention away again, but it is something that needs to be done.

May 13, 2015

Blah.  Blah blah blah.  And more blah.  That seems to be about all I have to say for today!  (Looks around for anything interesting.)

Nope, nothing here.  Move along.

May 14, 2015

So, the interesting thing about photography is that you can get good at taking shots of just about anything, and if you have the right programs, you can make them interesting.  I've been doing a lot more computer art based on my photos lately and really enjoying some of the work.  It's a good break from writing, too.  Not that writing is going badly, but I just need to step away from it now and then.

I should be writing more short stories this month, but the brain is bouncing off even the novels.  I'm getting some short stuff done, but really . . . not pushing very hard.  Just playing around and relaxing a bit.

May 15, 2015

I did a fun Flash Friday story for this week about how the dictionary has saved the world from the Zombie Apocalypse.  http://zette.blogspot.com/2015/05/flash-fiction-146-power-of-words.html

Yes, it's a bit odd, but it was fun to write.  I need more fun to write stuff.  Maybe I'm taking this stuff far too seriously.

Or not seriously enough.

Hmmm.  Hard to say at this point.

May 16, 2015

I have a new plan for weekends which is to cut back on the writing from Friday night through Sunday.  Not stop, of course, but unless I have something demanding my attention, just write 1k or so a day and call it good for those three days.  Play with more art.  Spend some time outside.  (Well, until the heat starts up.  And the bugs.  And. . . .)

We'll see how long this holds up.  I'll still need to get DAZ work done, which is rarely here before the weekend, but I'll have to be flexible there.

But yeah.  More art stuff.  Good plan.

May 17, 2015

We went on a lovely ride this afternoon.  It was good to get out and seen the great clouds.  Stone State Park is very green, too.    I am trying out my 'less writing' weekend and I think it will work out.  Russ says that next weekend we might go to Squaw Creek Wildlife Refuge!  That would be great!  Hope the weather holds up for it.

I haven't done much writing at all so far today.  I'm going to try and finish a short story, though.  So that's what I'm off to do.  Oh, and maybe actually upload all this stuff!

May 18, 2015

Oh how I enjoy it when writing is going better.  Touched by the Wild is clearly the right story to be working on at the moment.  It's flowing and the rewrite is already about 4k longer than the original at the same story point.  This is fun.

Looking forward to maybe going to Squaw Creek this weekend, too.  We'll have to see how the weather looks -- which might not be good, so we might not go.  We'll see.  We'll do something fun.

May 19, 2015

Writing is still going well.  I'm about 19k into the story and picking up a few nice little nuances and added description.  I'm also expanding on Shannon and Derry's relationship.  It will not be graphic, but it will be obvious they're more than friends.  I am seeing a sort of society where love relationships can be with same sex partners and does not interfere with marriages, especially in the nobility who are going to marry for power and not often for love.  You do not have to have a same-sex lover (or any lover at all), but it does happen.  Shannon and Derry grew up together.  They have a long relationship that started in a solid friendship.

Derry is just back from four years in a foreign cell, captive of a crazy king.  He's just made contact with the fae and been gifted with powers he didn't ask for and doesn't understand.  Everything is about to get out of hand.

May 20, 2015

I can't believe how cold it has been around here the last few days!  Well, not as bad as western Nebraska, where it has been snowing, but still colder than it needs to be in late May.

Of course, then I have to think about it getting a lot hotter and deciding if that would be better.

Why can't we simply have a year of nice weather?  is that too much to ask?

Yeah, thought so.

The writing is going well.  Getting back to it now.

May 21, 2015

The weather is somewhat better.  We're getting cool stuff, though, sometimes.  Very odd.  I'm not complaining.  The longer we go without AC the better.

I have two things I'm basically working on right now -- Touched by the Wild rewrite and Second Chance new novel.  Second Chance is not moving at the moment, though I do know a  bit of what I want to go next.

I am not doing much on short stories.  I probably should, but I just don't have the push for it this year.

May 22, 2015

Tomorrow is trip day.  Lovely trip to Squaw Creek wildlife refuge!

I am gathering all the camera equipment and pretending like I won't be so excited that I'll forget to change lenses or use the closeup stuff.  LOL

But yay!

Squaw Creek Wildlife Refuge

May 23, 2015

Rain!  It's never rained this much while we were at the refuge!  Got some interesting pictures of stuff in the rain, though, so that's good!

On to St. Joe for the night, too.  Great weekend.

May 24, 2015

Lovely morning at Squaw Creek and then a great time at DeSoto with some lovely little goslings.

So all in all, this was a great weekend.

May 25, 2015

Even though we are having some cool weather, overall this has been a very nice spring.  We haven't gotten any big storms.  I did lose part of my mulberry bush -- the part where I got a lot of bird pictures, of course -- but that wasn't because of a storm.  A lilac had intertwined with it and pushed part of it off.

Russ has been taking me for lovely rides, too.  I am starting to feel more human.

May 26, 2015

Getting lots done on Touched by the Wild.  The story is basically the same, but it's changed quite a bit of the smaller details and grown by several thousand words already.  I'm curious to see how long it is in the end.

Playing with photos.  Playing with art stuff.  This is going well.

May 27, 2015

Writing has been going very well.  I'm enjoying the story and it is moving along nicely.  Second Chance is building up a few scenes in my head, which is what it needs.

I'm looking at ways to change my office a bit, too.  Change helps me.  We'll see what I can come up with!

May 28, 2015

We took a late evening ride out to Stone State Park tonight.  We don't usually go when it's nearly dark.  Everything looks different.  I expected to see some deer at least, but they were all in hiding.  Lovely night for a ride, though.

We've been watching Dempsy and Makepeace a lot of nights.  Really, interesting British cop show.  Dempsy, the American, is way over the top sometimes -- but it's been fun to watch.

May 29, 2015

I am pleased with the writing right now.  I know I often go on about how things are dragging, but I know that my 'dragging' is usually super speed for others.  I think it is more to do with the sluggishness in my brain when I'm trying to fit things together.  That can be annoying.

Overall, though, I think I'm doing okay.  I hope this keeps up!

May 30, 2015

I moved the DVDs into my office today, so that they take up most of half a wall.  Impressive collection -- and Russ as a bunch over at his house too.  I hope to get time to start watching stuff again.  With it right here, staring at me -- well, who knows?

This is a way to get interested in other things, get a little inspiration going.  I don't need it right at this moment -- writing is going well -- but I don't want to fall into the abyss again if I can help it!

May 31, 2015

This last of the month has been brutal.  So much stuff to get done and a lot of it that couldn't be done ahead of time.  DAZ newsletter, Challenge winner, new Challenge, edit DAZ Pages, FM challenge, and the new issue of Vision, which is the hardest to get done.  I'll have it tomorrow.

I'll be happy to get it all done and out of the way!  What a mess!
